Simple Machines: Inclined Plane
Today we are looking at our first of 6 simple machines. The Inclined Plane.
Remember a simple machine helps us do work and makes our work easier.
Another name for an Inclined Plane is a Ramp
A Plane is a flat surface
An Incline is a slope
An inclined plane is a flat surface where one end is higher then the other! Where might we see a flat surface where one side is higher then the other?
Helps people move loads! A load is what ever needs to be lifted.
Force: a push or a pull! how we move a load (object)
Let's Review:
What is a force?

Different Materials and Inclined Planes
Tell me what is the same about these two objects?
Will these materials absorb or repel water? Who remembers what absorb means? What about repel?
Now lets learn about inclined planes!
Its experiment time! At your desk groups you will find some objects books and a board! lets see which goes the furthest and if the height of the ramp changes anything.

Classifying Materials and Discovering Movement!
To start you will find in front of you two hula hoops! As a class please sort the materials into either wood or metal!
What makes them the same?
What makes them different?
Are there any that are both?

Today we are looking at objects that are made from more then one material and what friction is.
what objects can you think of that are made from more then one material?
Share these with your elbow partner!

Natural and Built Features
In communities there are two types of features.
1. Natural Features: Features that are created by nature.
2. Built Features: Features built or created by humans.
Looking at these images ask your self:

Hello Parents and Guardians,
I have had a few questions about costumes for the Reader’s Theatre. We have made masks in class and each student has chosen a shirt and pants to bring in and go along with their mask. The planning sheet has been sent home with them tonight to help them remember and tell you all about what we are doing. The presentations will take place Tomorrow afternoon in our classroom rm104 after lunch at 1:20pm and run until about the end of the day.
Thank you,
Gareth Hussey

Lets compare it to our own community what are some natural built places and what are some human made places? Lets list them on chart paper!
What are some differences between the two places where the girl lives?
Now lets think about Richmond Hill. What do we have in our own community? What do we like about it? Lets list some on the white board.
