Playground Visit- Structures and Inclined Planes

Today we will be visiting the playground, but not to play! We will be looking for some structures if you are in grade one and some inclined planes if you are in grade two!

The rules of the visit:

1st: You and a partner that I assign will find either and structure or an Inclined plane. 

2nd: You will fill in your observation sheet. 

3rd: You will make a model of your section of the playground using straws and Plasticine

4th: Next day in class we will be sharing our structures and planes.

5th: If there is time at the end and your work is handed to me you may play on the playground.

Community Helper: Fire Fighter

Today we are going to be learning all about Fire Fighters! Our first community helper. 

As we watch this video try and remember three things for me. 

1. What tools and equipment do they use?
2. Can you name two types of trucks?
3.  Who do they help?
3. What is their job in the community?
Bonus: what do fire fighters do in between fighting fires?

Simple Machines: Inclined Plane

Today we are looking at our first of 6 simple machines. The Inclined Plane. 

Facts About The Inclined Plane

Remember a simple machine helps us do work and makes our work easier. 

Another name for an Inclined Plane is a Ramp

A Plane is a flat surface 

An Incline is a slope

An inclined plane is a flat surface where one end is higher then the other! Where might we see a flat surface where one side is higher then the other?

Helps people move loads! A load is what ever needs to be lifted.

Force: a push or a pull! how we move a load (object)

Today we are going to starting learning about some community helpers. 

We will start by reading the following book.

Its experiment time! At your desk groups you will find some objects books and a board! lets see which goes the furthest and if the height of the ramp changes anything.

Hello Parents and Guardians,

I have had a few questions about costumes for the Reader’s Theatre. We have made masks in class and each student has chosen a shirt and pants to bring in and go along with their mask. The planning sheet has been sent home with them tonight to help them remember and tell you all about what we are doing. The presentations will take place Tomorrow afternoon in our classroom rm104 after lunch at 1:20pm and run until about the end of the day.
