In grade two we have started to make our float or sink boats. Below are some pictures of an exemplar that we will be completing as a class in order to later complete the task on our own. The rubric is also part of this exemplar.

Parental Contact

Hello Parents and Guardians,

Thanks for taking the time to look at our classroom blog. This is my primary means of letting you know at home, what is happening in the class each day.  On the top right corner of the page, you can subscribe to our blog and receive a daily email between 3:00-5:00 pm.

Before the students leave at the end of the day, we will complete together our agendas and a blog entry indicating all homework, upcoming assignments, and important events happening at our school. I like using a blog so students can discover what type of organizational method works best for them.

On the blog I will be posting a great deal of useful information, such as:
  • homework assignments
  • assessment information (how work is being marked)
  • links to provide students with extra practice
  • texts (videos, readings etc.) for students to enrich class discussions and activities
  • links to all online tools we will be using in class

I would also like to compile a list of email addresses from the parents/guardians in the class, so that I can occasionally send out group emails about important events, projects, etc. You can click on the link in blue below to fill in the contact information of up to two people for each student.

I'm looking forward to a great year!!!

Gareth Hussey

Hello :)

I normally start one of these letters with welcome back to all the students and asking about how the summer went. I guess it is a little bit different this time. Today is the first of many months that I am going to be spending with your child as an afternoon teacher. My greatest hope is that this will be a time of learning and fun. I recently saw the quote “I care more about the people my students become than the scores they get on tests.” The more I teach the more this holds true for me.

This will be my third year of teaching in a school and I'm excited to be part of the Moraine Hills Family. In the past few years I have also worked as an Outdoor Educator and Camp Counselor for the YMCA and as a Teacher for the Stratford Shakespeare School. I'm excited to get to know all of you and work with a class full of leaders.

Since I will be learning about your child and you, for I am sure they all have wonderful stories to tell about all the fun they have at home, I thought it would be only fair if you learn something about me. I was born in Nobleton and have spent most of my life living there. I am the youngest of two children having only an older sister. Growing up my largest influences were nature, reading and of course sports. My favorite team is still the Toronto Maple Leafs and I hold hope that they will once again win the Stanley Cup.

My biggest influences during my teenage years were my experiences at camp. From working at a summer camp, I discovered I wanted to be a teacher and I loved spending time in the great outdoors. I still try to spend as much of my summer as possible Outdoors.

This past year was a crazy one for me. I got married recently and moved to a new town. Most of my down time right now is either spent learning all I can about being a teacher or at my local CrossFit gym. My lifelong obsession is reading; myself and my wife are already trying to figure out where we are going to put all of our books.

I believe in open minds and open doors, so do not hesitate to call, email or check out our soon to be created class blog to see what we are up to in class. There will be some more information coming home on Monday to tell you how to reach me and where to find our class blog.

Sincerely ,
G. Hussey
